Welcome to our list of the best JRPG selections whose loss you will regret sooner. Whether it is a colourful fairytale world or an everyday rustic city, we guarantee that it will be an adventure you will remember with love.
Some people today may not even know that one of their favourite games is actually the JRPG. It’s much easier to call the game RPG, but you’ll be surprised how many popular games actually qualify as JRPGS.
JRPG is by definition a Japanese role-playing game; and that’s really all it has. These are the criteria we took into account for this list:
- Character development
- Exploration / Suite
After all that has been said and done, this is our best choice for the best JRPGS ever.
10 Emblem of the fire: Alarm Clock
|Date of first publication||April 19, 2012|
The game that introduced me to the series is at the top of our JRPG list. This picture was taken 2000 years after the publication of the original fire sign. After being found in a field that doesn’t remember your past, you must help your comrades to defeat the Risen One.
As in the previous sections, you can fully customize your character. The configuration options are numerous and allow the player to experience a more intimate gaming experience. The ability to change hairstyle, stockings, eye shape and much more is highly appreciated by lovers of customization like me.
In the battle there is a transition from expressive pixels to 3D visualization, and that worked very well. I’ve always been a sucker for games where you can create a character the way you want, so that was a plus for me.
You can choose from a colorful cast you need in battle, with the option to combine the cast as you wish. Players have the ability to control each character or let the AI do the dirty work.
What I especially like about this title is the way the hands are in the game. Anyone new to the Fire Emblem series will quickly understand how it works, therefore this name is highly recommended for beginners.
The visual support of the transition to battle is smooth and effortless. You will notice the many different artistic styles that this game has experienced, and they fit well together. It’s not only a great way to immerse yourself in the show, but it’s also a sign of fire: The awakening will take you from the beginning.
9 Paper Mario: Millenniumgate
|Date of first publication||July 2004|
The franchise that a lot of people love, Paper Mario: The thousand-year-old door gives this popular series the charm of role-playing. The improvement is significant compared to the previous part, as Mario’s contribution follows the same repeating path to the rescue of Princess Peach. While Mario games aren’t really my first choice for this reason, Paper Mario is a bit of a game changer.
What do I mean? What makes these special games so interesting are the big differences with previous games. Mario’s diary is in a world of… You know, the newspaper. No, it’s true.
Everything, from trees to enemies, is made of paper, and yes, it’s cooler than it looks. When Princess Peach is kidnapped, you and your faithful friend Gombella must travel through an animated world on a mission to save her.
During your journey you will meet many unique characters who will accompany you on this journey. What makes Paper Mario so memorable is the freshness of the new gameplay mechanics. Because the Mario game has RPG elements, the fans (myself included) have been excited right from the start.
The game uses classic RPG ingredients, but also adds new ones. For example, if you have set the time correctly, you can press A to get a few extra moves on your opponent.
The fights take place on the central stage (no, literally on the real stage), they are followed by a crowd and everything. If you do not entertain the crowd throughout the battle, they will attack you without hesitation. If all this doesn’t convince you to try, I honestly don’t know what it is.
8 Ni none Kuni II: Kingdom of the Netherlands
|Date of first publication||March 2018|
|Platform||Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4|
|Publishing house||Bandai Namco Entertainment JP|
Let me start by saying that Ni Noh Cooney is a real treat for the eyes. It was also awarded for the co-production of Studio Ghibli. Or Noh Cooney: The Kingdom of the Renaissance is an extension of the wrath of the White Witch, which took place hundreds of years after the events of the original.
The game is played in the third person, which combines the classic fighting mechanism of the role-playing game with the charm of the open world. You can recruit monsters and help them in battle.

It’s one of those games where you have a lot to do so you never get bored. When you are not at war, you can help to rule the kingdom by assigning tasks to your people for the good of the domain. You are also free to explore the open world, which is a must in a game as beautiful as this.
Watching a Ghibli film is great in itself, but a real travel experience is everything you could wish for. After receiving positive feedback, fans of the series, whether beginners or veterans, will agree that the game is fun to play and is one of the best JRPGs – from start to finish.
7 The world stops at your place
|Date of first publication||July 2007|
|Platform||Nintendo DS, iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch|
|Developer||Enix Squared, Jupiter, G.A.N.D. (mobile phone and AC lines)|
If you’ve always wondered what it’s like to walk the streets of Shibuya as a Japanese teenager, then this game is for you. The World Ends With You is definitely one of the most distinctive names I have ever met.
After getting good points when it came out, the game was followed with great interest by the fans, so yes – it’s a big deal. In the middle of the plot is the protagonist Neku Sakuraba and his group of friends who have united to fight the system.
There are many things that distinguish this game from others. Let’s start with the visual effects, because they are among the most unique I’ve ever seen. The artistic direction of TWEWY is essentially AWESOME.
The artistic style is so specific that it is easily distinguishable from the others, so it is a relief for the JRGP. Aesthetics really radiates this vibration of teenage rebellion and the struggle for her right to survive.
All characters are interesting and have a special character, full of color and personality. I don’t want to say too much about this story, but suffice it to say that the character development in this game is one of the best I’ve ever seen. When you study their background and find out why they are fighting, you feel a deep connection with them.
The battle in this game is very clear, which is best seen in the DS version. You can use both screens to fight and even go as far as shouting into the microphone to place certain attacks. Well, I think we all agree that there’s nothing better than a game that makes full use of its systems.
Before I got the name, I heard a lot of positive comments about the soundtrack of the game. As a big fan of the jet set radio series, some of my friends advised me to listen to it right away; and oh my God, I wasn’t disappointed. For those who like to fight against society (well, at least in video games), this is exactly what you need.

Chrono Trigger, also known as one of the best video games of all time, should not be taken lightly. The strength of the game lies in the development of certain characters and a common story. Some of the main characters come from different eras, which gives more variety to the central theme of the games. History is marked by many twists and turns, some of which will surprise you.
Earlier games generally don’t meet today’s standards, but Chrono Trigger does. It was one of the first games to introduce the New Game + system, which not only gave players a fresh start, but also took all the equipment and essential elements from their previous game.
This system has proven to be very influential in the role-playing game genre, it has been adopted by many other games over the years and allows you to enjoy the game again. As I said before, if there’s one thing players are looking for, it’s repeatability, and Chrono Trigger did a great job.

|Developer||A gambling enthusiast|
|Publishing house||Pokemon Company Nintendo|
Pokemon Emerald, a sister game to the original Ruby and Sapphire Pokemon, has shaken up this new generation and introduced a vibrant new Pokemon game that we still love today, with great animated sprites that are also integrated into the mix.
This contribution to the series takes place in the Hoenn region, which is known for its tropical and lively atmosphere. As in previous games, you’ll take on the Pokemon League challenge and fight a few bad guys along the way. But this time you meet two opposing teams with different ideals.
To be honest, there isn’t a single feature that stands out, because the name perfects every aspect of what makes the game great. From the trials and tribulations that await you during your adventure, to the people you will meet and love, to the soundtrack of a beautifully crafted game, everything will be a great pleasure.
Not only does the game itself keep you happy, but the content of the post-game will give you a hard feeling when the Gameboy falls over.

4 Shin Megami Tensei: Night
|Date of first publication||February 2003|
Shin Megami Tensei is located in modern post-apocalyptic Tokyo: Nocturne will involve you emotionally from the beginning. This game tends towards a darker theme, where the main character (who, I must say, is just a high school student) turns into a demon. (Poor baby.)
Given the release date of the game, the graphics were very impressive, but that’s just Atlus for you.
It is said that the Nocturne is difficult for some players, but the challenge is worth it. I think the coolest thing in Nocturne must definitely be the moral system.

Whether it’s good or bad, in the end you have a choice. The choice you make during the game determines the outcome. It certainly gives more repeatability to the game, which I’m always looking forward to.
Of course, there were a lot of JRPGS on the market when this game came out, but that didn’t stop it from becoming absolutely dominant. The game was so popular that 185,000 copies were sold in the first week.
Who would have thought so many people would be so excited about the infernal apocalypse?
|Date of first publication||June 2010|
|Platform||Wii, new Nintendo RDS|
The team working on The Chronicles of Xenoblade had to work with the limitations of the Wii console, and they certainly pushed it to reach its full graphics potential. It is also worth mentioning that this game has surprised everyone with its incredible soundtracks and breathtaking gameplay.
I’m sure many of us know how exhausting role-playing can lead to overtime, but that’s not the case here. You’re hoping to meet your enemies, because it’s too much fun to beat them up.
The short stories are characterized by their quality and fidelity, with live animation and a profound plot in agreement with them. Probably not exactly what used to be done, exploring the amazing surroundings of a corpse.
Yeah, you’re investigating what’s essentially a dead titanium body. Pretty crazy, huh?
Your goal is to make your way through hordes of robots, reach the top of the titanium head and claim a divine sword. Such an interesting concept for a game, I mean, honestly, who invented it?

No game has ever given me an experience like Earth. It’s certainly an understatement to call it unique. If there’s one thing this game is known for, it’s how different it is from everything that exists today. When he arrives on earth, he tells the story of a boy named Ness, whose life changes after a meteorite impact in his hometown Onte.
From then on, he goes through a lot of things, and I mean a lot of things that a 13-year-old boy probably shouldn’t. This game is known for its bizarre dialogue, where you make jokes left and right and surprise yourself when you least expect it.
Fighting is simple but comfortable, with a lot of enemies who are just stupid. If I have to give advice to someone who’s playing on dry land, it’s that you have to talk to everyone. I’m not joking, EVERYBODY (including the NPCs in the background) has something interesting. I know a lot of people won’t believe me because most games don’t take the time to deal with the NPC, but trust me on this. Many things will make you laugh in the earthly element, but when it reaches your mental anguish, you really feel it.

Many things will make you laugh in the earthly element, but when it reaches your mental anguish, you really feel it.
It is probably also worth mentioning that the battle of the bosses is one of the most terrible in the history of video games, but you will have to see for yourself. Undoubtedly one of the best JRPGs…

Despite the fact that Person 5 is the best combat mechanic of all time, he lacks wisdom. You will find Persona 4 : Gold shines bright when it surpasses the JRPG in every way. You start your journey by going to the rural, quiet and boring city of Inaba. There you claim to have strong ties with your friends and try to solve a mysterious murder case that confuses the city. (Come on, I’m supposed to have at least one common joke here).

This game does a fantastic job of balancing life phases and crawling dungeons. The main objective of the game is to find out who the killer of the city is.
I’ve always had a soft spot for mysterious games like Ace Attorney and Danganronpa, so I (and I can’t stress this enough) immediately made the connection.
In your free time you can meet friends and the affection you get can improve your combat experience. The characters in the game have always surpassed the others because they have always felt like real friends. Character development is most effective when striving for a golden end, so I strongly recommend it.
As my experience shows, you will want to spend more time with these friends than with your real friends. I can sit here and try to explain why this game is golden (well, here’s another one), but frankly, to get the full experience, you have to play it yourself.
