Our Top 10 Metroidvania Games

Metroidvania, the main game genre developed in the 1990s, is a game from two legendary series: Castlevania and Metroid. It was one of the most enduring and popular genres of all time, full of unforgettable characters and worlds. To the delight of the latter and many others, the genre has been reborn in the last decade and independent developers are at the forefront of the genre.

Traditionally, Metroidvania games are not only similar to title games, but are essentially 2D sidescroller games in which the player explores and connects worlds, acquiring new skills that allow him to retreat and unlock new areas, platforms and battles.

Given the fierce competition in this list, on which we have decided to judge, we have established 5 criteria that determine the quality of the Metropolis:

Criteria of the Metropolis :

– Intelligence
– Battle

– Platform – Atmosphere and Soundtrack
– Skills and accesses

Axioma Verge is a love letter to the Metroid series, and he certainly doesn’t try to hide his inspiration, but he certainly has a style that has made him his favorite. The player takes command of Trace, a scientist trapped on a planet called Sudra after a laboratory accident.

One of the strengths of the game is the huge number of weapons and tools available for tracking; each of them is unique and has several incredible gameplay techniques. An example is the Skill Disrupter, which burns waves of energy that can create new jumping platforms or change the properties of enemies, for example to make them slower.

There is also a remote-controlled drone that shoots a small robot capable of spotting dangerous or inaccessible areas; the variety of ways to fight an area or an enemy is impressive.

The music is unforgettable, fits perfectly into your surroundings and gives you the feeling that you are on an epic and fantastic voyage of discovery. Speaking of discoveries, exploring the game in all its freshness and beauty requires dedication, tools, bonuses and school to unlock each zone. The map is useful if you are a little confused about the location and clarity, and some areas seem a bit boring and uninteresting.

Guests are interesting, and with a variety of weapons at your disposal, there are many ways to fight any enemy. The gameplay is smooth and well animated, and it would be difficult to blame the platform, especially given the wide range of tools at your disposal.

With a unique twist on a fantastic scroller that pays homage to the classics, Axiom Verge has a lot to offer fans of the genre.

Dust: La Queue d’Elysée is a beautifully hand-drawn adventure that hides many hearts and emotions beneath its cartoon-like surface. The player disguises himself as an amnesic warrior known as Dust, and with a talking sword and a flying fox called Fidget, you set yourself the task of restoring your identity.

Right from the bat, the game has much more action than many other games on the list; hordes of enemies will find their end on the tip of your knife, in a smooth and beautifully animated combat system.

Despite the fact that the fight is beautiful and solid, it does not develop much in the first hours of the game and there is a risk that it will happen again.

However, the management system and platform are extremely flexible and are complemented by a large exploration map that encourages and rewards lush exploration. One of the most remarkable aspects of Dust is the incredible soundtrack, which perfectly complements the dynamic battle, making it an epic adventure.

Waking up with no memory in a cave and then realizing that you are actually on a floating island inhabited by talking rabbits (mimigas) threatened by a mad scientist and a talking toaster is an unforgettable discovery for this iconic classic.

Cave Story was developed in 5 years by developer Daisuke Amaya and is a very influential indie game that has demonstrated the potential of single-player and retro games.

The characters and animations may seem cute, but the story is tragic and moving. The doctor killed the poor cute mimigas until he found a use for them. By poisoning them with red flowers the cute Mimigas go crazy and arm themselves.

Building peace and legends in this game arouses emotions, especially when you have to kill the abnormal Mimigas, some of which are your friends.

The game doesn’t hold your hand. The game process rewards an experienced player who learns from his mistakes. Too many blows? Your weapon will return to lower levels, so the punishment is severe, but encourages you to get the best. Guns and wrestling is great, and winning every boss gives you a sense of satisfaction.

The music of the original game is first class and will stay in your head for a few days after you have played the game. The construction of the world is well done – every level and area is beautiful and full of details.

In general, the game is a classic in every way, from intrigue to art to gameplay, and it is well worth your time.

Located on a nameless island in a long-forgotten, devastated kingdom, the Dead Cells control a unique hero; the prisoner is a very similar creature that lives and controls the bodies of the executed.

While the light is focused on the action, the game loop is a great pleasure. Detailed and randomized levels encourage you to explore each area and search for each item.

And oh my God, the variety of weapons is one of the strengths of the Dead Cells. You will notice that you ride your bike all the time to try out the last frying pan you found. Take the time to explore the maps completely and find new weapons you’ve never tried – it’s really useful.

A reliable weapon base is supported by a simple but dynamic combat system. The number of dead cells is much higher than in most other games on this list, but it is one of the strengths of the game.

As you sneak through levels and platforms at dizzying speed, shoot arrows and combo guns, you’ll feel omnipotent. A huge reservoir of weapons and items provides a variety of game styles, tactics and rehearsals.

The variety of design levels, weapons, enemy placement and areas to explore makes Dead Cells a varied platform game when the atmosphere is light, giving you many reasons to play over and over again.

A breathtaking spectacle – the Ori and the Blind Forest – tells the story of the Ori, the guardian spirit who undertake a journey to restore the Niebel forest. The game begins with a broken heart when the mother of the Ori, the figure of Naru, dies of hunger, starting the emotional and atmospheric journey to set things right.

As the Ori have pointed out, the strongest feature of the Ori is their visual style, which brings out most of the other entries in this list.

Besides the daring and fascinating taste, the background of the game comes to life thanks to the constant movement of the environment and the animation. This gives the levels a sense of reality and the forest becomes a place to live and breathe and not just an art object that serves as a backdrop for the level.

The fight is far from the most important on the list; it is relatively one-dimensional, never really develops unless you wait for the opening and then hit the enemy by pointing at point-blank range and attacking with the scapular. In contrast to this weakness, however, the platform is one of the strongest on the list because the movement seems fluid and responsive.

As in this genre, the Ori allow you to explore the past while discovering new skills and abilities. The game contains dozens of secrets and many places to explore. In combination with a tasty decor it is worth a visit.

If I wasn’t objective, blasphemy might be at the top of the list because I loathe their oppressive peace, their framework and their struggle. The world of Tsvstodiya, beautifully restored in handmade pixel art, is a dark and gloomy land at the mercy of a creature called Miracle.

This deity is revered and feared by the people. As a penitent, the last survivor of the massacre, you undertake a bloody pilgrimage to discover the cause of all the world’s problems.

In addition to the incredible environment and art, the game contains some of the best battles you can find in Metroidvania. Attacks are heavy and reactive, with many combos and attacks that are later unlocked, such as a late attack game where a column of light emanates from where you hit the ground.

Most patterns are beautifully decorated, it’s fun to fight and dripping with legends and symbols.

The platform is mixed and it is perhaps the weakest element in the game. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good with glasses, but with others it’s too punitive. Between the checkpoints are large pieces of game, and the terrifying peaks are by far the biggest cause of (permanent) death in the game. Also, the perspective is sometimes a bit difficult to read when jumping.

Research – another strong point of the game, the card is logical and easy to read, and the game is full of secrets and notches. The game works like a 2D soul when it comes to progress, with Prayer God – your campfire that allows you to replenish your potions and fight the enemies of the world. The world of Cvstodia is a dark, cruel and cruel game that puts you under pressure and satisfies you.

As deputy director of the Night Symphony, Koji Igarashi has updated the series of castles, creating some of the pillars of the Metroidanya genre. The Symphony of the Night follows the attempts of Alucard, the son of Dracula, to put an end to the evil conspiracy of the priest known as Shaft, who wants to bring Dracula back from the dead.

One of the improved features of the Symphony of the Night was the inclusion of certain rolling elements, such as attributes and alignment. Alucard can also have magic, but the input can be too complex in a combat environment and often works less well.

However, the introduction of a variety of weapons has been a welcome change and provides a basis for rewarding intelligence and withdrawal.

As the first lateral controller, the formula has some shortcomings, such as very homogeneous spaces and undeniably straight lines with some enemies in between. But despite the strange waste, Castle Dracula is a cohesive pleasure to explore. At that time, the discovery of a hidden area was astonishing and was still considered one of the best discoveries in the gaming industry.

The art direction, the music and the atmosphere are of the highest level; the castle looks majestic and Gothic, and of course the decorations are no different from theirs. Alucard’s drawing and portrait fit in well with the surroundings and are awfully old.

Boss fights in the game are part of what makes the game so memorable. Poor bombers who tend to get used to it, even today.

It is not for nothing that the original Playstation disc of this game is considered a collector’s item. It is a game that took a risk that paid off and helped define the genre.

The spiritual successor to Kastlevaniya, also developed by Koji Igarashi, Bloodstained offers an updated perspective on the genre, with impressive graphic fidelity, soundtrack and story.

During the Industrial Revolution, Miriam follows the heroine Miriam, who fights in a demon-ravaged castle and hell itself.

One of the intriguing factors of the game is the story itself. Miriam survived the sacrificial ritual of the Alchemy Guild, which linked people with demonic crystals to be used as a sacrifice for the demon invasion.

Another survivor, Goebel, driven mad by the trauma of his earlier treatment, brought an evil castle back to earth. The story unfolds with fascinating dialogues and high-temperature music that perfectly complements the gameplay.

Bloodstained offers a wide range of weapons, even in the first area of the infected ship, where you can try guns, claymores and whips. I can also use spells to throw a fireball or make a mass of chewy tentacles that erase the screen. Battles and spells can be muffled, with each weapon you feel its weight and usefulness. Battles between bosses can sometimes seem a little unpleasant, but they are visually stunning.

The search is very fluid and interactive. The map is clear and concise and reduces setbacks and losses. The research has a dynamic character that is lacking in other Metroidvania games. Is there a wall in the way? Why don’t you blow up a cannon with a fireball and shoot it through?

The atmosphere is perfect and the surroundings are full of details and dynamic backgrounds, like the bloody moon in the castle, which bathes the surroundings in an invading purple glow.

Blood stains are a must for anyone who loves the Castlevania series. It offers a positive, refined and interesting view of the site with very few drawbacks.

Super Metroid is one of the most iconic and nostalgic adventures of all time. It is the highlight of the Metroid series and has a huge impact on many games on the list. Samus is summoned back to arm himself when the space pirates return and steal the last subway from the Ceres space station.

Super Metroid was the first game in the series to add automatic mapping, making Zebe’s searches much more fun and faster than previous games. Samus’ control seems to be rigid and unlimited.

These controls allow you to do real research and if you jump off a wall, you can enter areas where you would not normally be able to follow the intended path.

The zebra environment still offers a good mix of environmental risks, artistic values and appropriate environmental music. In addition, there are some exceptional patterns in the game.

One of the famous bosses is Crocomir, who lets you push this damage back into a lava puddle where it suffers from visceral fusion. Another smart boss is Dreygon, who you can kill in a more sophisticated way by letting him catch you before you connect your handle to the damaged dome and get an electric shock.

The progress and improvements are really exciting in Super Metroid because they can all change the way the game is played, such as the increased speed of upgrades that give the player a real sense of power, the ability to run, break everything and feel dynamic.

There are so many reasons why Super Metroid remains one of the most popular games of all time, with very few bugs and a timeless appeal, it is a game that every player should play.

A shady Halloween land, the insect kingdom built by the great pale king, when an infection swept through a once thriving nation. Enter the Knight, a nomadic warrior who is an unlikely and disturbing hero of the game.

One of the first things a player will notice (and be defeated) is a beautiful handmade style, just like the palette of the sublime Ori, and he feels like he’s living in a world that breathes.

Unlike the Ori, colours are used in different ways, often creating discrete scenes that show the player the neglect of this once mighty empire. The result is a world with such a saturated atmosphere and so much detail that it is almost impossible to distinguish a weak region in the game.

The gameplay is the best on the list; both on the platform and in battle you feel safe and secure. The usual jumping, evasion and striking mechanisms are in place and highly responsive, complemented by spells and skills. The platform is fair, but complex, and you often have to use unlocked features and environmental functions to promote the game.

Boss fights are interesting and memorable. One of the first bosses you’re likely to meet is the impressive False Knight, which is very well thought out in terms of legend and gameplay.

What looks like a rude beast is nothing but a maggot with a powerful armor. His cute little face jumps out when you move it, which is just one of the many examples of charming cartoon characters in the game.

Setting up can be fun with cute characters and funny animations, but it remains an emotional and impressive journey where your decisions lead to different goals and give weight to your actions. It must be clear that Hollow Knight meets all the basic criteria and is the ideal option that all Metroidvania games should aspire to, so it is rightly at the top of the list.

So here’s our top 10 of one of the greatest genres of all time. It wasn’t an easy task, because the genre is full of quality games. With so many beautiful worlds to explore, patterns to win and secrets to discover, there is no excuse not to dive into them.

Of course, there are so many games for Metroidvania that could come first. Do you think we got it right? Let us know what you like in the comments below and what your favorite page scrolling is.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some bugs to save.
