Cyberpunk 2077 is an odyssey, not just a linear role-playing game. Night City seems dense and well populated, but it’s not just the people who give the place its personality. There are many times when one feels lost in Night City, because each area is well defined and detailed according to the people who live there, and it is somewhat similar to observing densely populated and polluted cities these days.
Cyberpunk 2077 often looks like a commentary and prediction about the direction our lives are taking, and that includes the RPG element. Once you’re immersed in a game, there’s often a sense of immersion, as if you’re talking to the characters yourself, and the first-person perspective begins to make sense.
I always thought Witcher 3 and Persona 5 Royal would be the pinnacle of RPGs, offering some of the most raw and true experiences of narrative divergence and self-mockery, but Cyberpunk 2077 sometimes surpasses both games and other times it surpasses them just below.
CD Projekt RED has been working for 8 years on Cyberpunk 2077 and was first announced in May 2012 with Witcher 3. While the whole studio led them to Wither 3 and made it one of the best games of all time. A small team is dedicated to this science fiction adventure set in a dystopian future.
Cyberpunk 2077 is inspired by Mike Pondsmith’s Cyberpunk 2020 tabletop role-playing game and is the sequel. Few characters and elements make the transition to the AAA title, and Johnny Silverhand and World War IV keep it all together.
What we get in Cyberpunk 2077 is a society that comes together after events that devastate the world, including a nuclear explosion in the heart of Night City. All this leads to a heterogeneous mix of people, cultures, wealth and personalities.
To me, Cyberpunk 2077 seemed a bit discreet when I started playing it. Something seemed out of place (no insects), but the world was closed in their stories. Night City did not have the despair and stress of a dystopian world as described in Blade Runner. The film served as a basis and inspiration for the game, and although much has been carefully executed, the Cyberpunk 2077 lacks tranquillity.
Once you’ve completed the game’s prologue, you’ll be bombarded with quests and missions that can take 3 to 7 hours depending on how many side quests you’re pursuing. And it is in these side missions that you can enjoy the best moments of Cyberpunk 2077. It doesn’t really matter which life path you choose right after the game’s prologue, although you will get some answers to conversations based on the rescue path that will help you; other than that, it doesn’t really matter.
Like any good RPG, Cyberpunk 2077 offers more and more fun in side quests, it shows that CD Projekt RED focuses on making each quest remarkable, vivid, descriptive and memorable.
These quests also allow you to meet many other characters you might not otherwise see. Not only are they quests an alternative that you would do if you didn’t want to do the main quests, but these quests feel like an extension of the main quests.
Story– Can you put a price on freedom?
Although often overlooked, I believe from the beginning that Cyberpunk 2077 is a story of characters who want their individual freedom. This freedom is not only expressed by first being tied up, then standing up and bursting out when the opportunity arises. This freedom is more poetic and personal for everyone.
Characters like Johnny Silverhand, Vee, Panam, Judy, Snape and many others are looking for a way out of endless events, but they’re connected and it’s up to you to decide what freedom means to you and who you ultimately want to be.
The story of Cyberpunk 2077 begins with three starts, and depending on how you want to develop your character, you can choose Street Kid, Corpo or Nomad. Each life path breaks with the characters with whom you come into contact and with whom you form an emotional bond throughout the game.
The only thing I missed in this story was a little coherence, something that bothered me. As I progressed, I was warned of the search every 5 minutes by a new call. Soon it became a recurring theme, and although I enjoyed all those searches, it started to get a bit heavy.
Compare this with the CD Projekt RED’s Witcher 3 : The wild hunt, every search had a purpose and a reason. In this game you felt obligated, while that may not be the case here, but they’re still worth the time you invest in them. The story takes you into the personal lives of the characters you come into contact with in and outside Nachtstad.
Gameplay – Shooting games that simulate shooters on target?
The first few minutes you want Cyberpunk 2077 to be played in third person, but that disappears quickly enough when you get to know the characters better. The game is not only horizontal, but also vertical. The gameplay isn’t as neat as the AAA title would have wanted. We now know that Cyberpunk 2077 was in a bit of a hurry and that there were some problems, of which fortunately many were solved by the patch of day 1.
But when Cyberpunk 2077 decides to shoot down all the cylinders, you literally feel like you’re playing a completely different game. Suddenly all the questions become irrelevant, because you’ll be playing the game for hours and hours.
What works best with Cyberpunk 2077 is that you can play the game the way you want. The stealth approach has helped me out of dangerous situations a million times, but there’s also something fun about walking around with your drawn weapons, and I strongly advise you to try it as soon as your character is able.
Cyberpunk 2077 looks a lot like a next-generation game, but the quests and storytelling are far from advanced. You’ll feel inhibited in certain parts of the game where you want something else to make it memorable or just interesting enough to do it over and over again.
Graphical – Spectacular
Now that everyone had an idea of what Cyberpunk 2077 would look like even before it was released, there were a lot of gameplay videos and trailers, but it’s only when you play Cyberpunk 2077 that you realise how exciting and believable it is.
This does not mean that there are no bugs or glitches in the game. There are many, but if the game decides to run smoothly. They’ll keep asking for more. The streets are starting to look familiar, the buildings will let you know where you are from afar.
Each character, especially Johnny Silverhand, was well thought out and played perfectly. It has a certain charm that makes you love this tormented character even more. There is also a nice cyberpunk atmosphere that serves as a theme for the rest of the game.
Cyberpunk 2077 looks like a hurried release, without the finish that a game with a long development time should have. That’s where the CP2077 lacks a little to impress the players. Still, if you’re willing to take a sip and ignore the bugs and problems, a visit to Night City will be a good experience. I had the impression that the game didn’t fill all the filters promised at launch. Cyberpunk 2077 does its best to give you the best possible break after being overwhelmed by Valhalla and games like Among Us.
