REVIEW – The latest installment of Call of Duty wanted EVERYTHING: a generation of modern consoles, the latest computer technology, an exciting new era, the original Black Ops – a worthy continuation of its history and the most advanced multiplayer mode. Was the activation successful?

Somewhere in one of the Facebook groups I read that Call of Duty annoyed the gaming community year after year by being so cheap and complacent, and they buy again year after year. There’s something in that, and it’s probably worth it – for those who haven’t yet – to see that the CoD is like the war in the Fallout series: He never changes. The same can be said of the last part, which may not be surprising.

Perseus, Soviet spy

Like many other CoD stories, the Cold War revolved around a great evil: the Soviet spy known as Perseus. While the Second World War was still going on, Perseus passed on information about the Manhattan project to the Soviets, and after a long silence in the midst of the arms race he became interested in nuclear weapons again. During this meeting the fortieth American president Ronald Reagan declares that this spy threatens the free world and accuses the CIA of hunting this mysterious but all the more dangerous enemy. Russell Adler, a black ops specialist, makes his appearance here, and he has three other personalities on his team: Alex Mason, Frank Woods and Jason Hudson.

Anyone who’s played with previous CoD matches: Black Ops can instantly recognize their name. We’ve mastered them several times in the last ten years, almost missing a point and a goal as clear as the team. Contrary to the previous details, we have the impression that they are there because they should be, because it is the quintessence of Black Ops, the real sequel. You can also talk to them in the garage where the edits are based, but now they are more small characters. The events here focus more on Adler, Perseus and a certain character called Bell. Who’s Bell? Well, you…

Direction of role play

There is a good reason that the protagonist of this story is someone for the first time in the series. We can specify their gender, skin colour, name and even a psychological profile. Of course, it also offers nice advantages that can be activated as an option. This is a somewhat absurd excuse, because there’s no point in firing bullets faster than z. B. an aggressive character. We can also actively engage in dialogue with Bell.

Raven Software, the team responsible for the campaign, was also very happy to work with screenwriter David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight), who had previously worked on Black Operators and Black Operators 2.

There is a good and a bad end to the game, with the last two versions. We can also carry out follow-up missions to change the results of our decisions. Through the menu you can choose the chapter you want to play again without losing track of the progress of the story, making it easy to get in and out of the campaign. Is it worth it? It depends on your appreciation of the main story or your involvement. The solo campaign isn’t too long at the beginning, so you’d better start at the beginning if you want a new ending. It’s up to you.

Treyarque in action: Multiplayer and Zombies

Unlike the campaign, the multiplayer and zombie modes go hand in hand, which means that we get the same individual lessons in PvP and PvE and can upgrade in both. Their expansion system is quite similar: all players also get new cards and new free modes. There is still a lot of new content to come in the competitive mode of the game, but the cooperative mode should be much lighter in the future.

On the other hand, all platforms, including multi-generation platforms, have cross-gaming mode and cross-progression. Of course, the system is designed to prevent unfair coupling.

As a result, multiplayer extends the range of small and closed maps with three new additional offers that can appear in the larger map format: VIP escort, combination weapon and dirty bomb. Personally, I would say that the beauty of this new fashion is that they all offer something for different moods. For example, the first option, 6 to 6, is much more psychological and conscious than the other competing options: It is built around interchangeable offensive and defensive towers, so as the game progresses, each team gets accustomed to the idea of the strategies their opponents pursue. This means that they learn to react when they are more or less aware and that they can in any case more easily negotiate a ping system that complements the text chat. Don’t expect anything as intense as Rainbow Six: The siege, but that’s pretty much the gameplay you’re aiming for.

Other war affected generation

It was clear that Activision would not miss the opportunity to adapt to the new generation of hardware that is making its debut this month. As I said, I was curious about the artistic part, and I can’t be disappointed: Nocturnal environments acquire a lot of personality thanks to new treatises on lighting and shadows. Some light effects in the interrogation rooms at the end of the campaign seem very spectacular, while the offices and garages full of glass jars and spy gadgets seem more realistic and darker. In general you feel good in closed spaces, while open spaces leave a lot to be desired: The vegetation can appear quite flat, even in the highest qualities, and the (really well defined) character patterns create contrasts. very striking with the surrounding rocks when they coincide several times.

On the other hand, the graphical tab offers us various configuration options. Curiously, the console versions also have a field of vision, but no more and no less than reality: It is available on all platforms. The new generation of consoles certainly improve with shorter load times, higher resolutions and performance up to 120 frames per second, although at certain times during the campaign (especially during the mission to Cuba) we have experienced some crashes and graphic problems. In my case, however, I used the PC version to write most of this review. I used two computers, one of which (supplied by our colleagues from Nvidia) is fully prepared for DLSS and ray tracing technology.

While the former plays a crucial role in immersion, the latter is flexible enough to adapt to 8K – for the few people who have such a screen at home – and as long as it’s a game that suits your needs. On a GTX 970 system, as recommended, you can get used to the idea that rendering many pixels in their original size is no problem. As with the latest versions of the series, the graphical tab is filled with customization options in different qualities to adapt the game to our needs, with all kinds of accompanying comments and the possibility of adding counters to the interface. Whichever way you look at it, the Cold War is a cornerstone of Activision in terms of history and content. It’s just the direction they’re heading.

On the threshold of a new generation

Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War is the beginning of a new generation of material with a very well made atmosphere, a really strong narrative thread and a very good basis to build a multiplayer for all tastes. Yeah, there are some things that are a little fishy: The Villains could have done more in the campaign, and not everyone will like the tone of the latest series. Even the zombies could have been a little more ambitious – they’re satisfied with a decent mechanical upgrade and a hell of a rave.

Professional:

+ The campaign corresponds very well to the Cold War
+ The atmosphere is technical, artistic, narrative and sonic very well done
+ The big cards and their multiplayer modes are a change of style.

Against:

– Zombies can get more love and material
– Console versions have some problems and crash in the campaign
– Not beautiful on consoles
