Those who can keep track of MTG probably know that the current game is the throne of Eldraine. But the magic: The Gathering has been around since 1993, and a lot has changed in the game since then, including the graphics on the cards.
Join us on a journey through the memory of MTG as we look at some of Magic’s strangest maps. Some of them will make you laugh and ask how they were approved.
The beginning of the list is classic, the Terrible Horde. The Horde looks like a cross between robots, monsters and random inanimate objects like street lamps and pots… I don’t want them coming after me.
It’s hard to say exactly what’s happening in this picture. There’s a man with a cone on his head, balancing with a blindfolded fox on a tree trunk, holding a basketball… with an artist’s palette in the middle. I can’t even try to explain.
The invocation of prejudice is a bit controversial, if you look at what the disguised characters carry next to the name of the card. Yeah, that card probably wouldn’t pass any tests these days.
Since this card has not been printed and will never be reprinted, the cards are sold for a lot of money, between $250 and $350.
Clergy of age
At first it doesn’t seem so bad until you read the text in italics and then look at the picture…
The shield of faith is put off by unbelievers.
Are those monkeys on their backs doing what I think they’re doing?
Ebon Pretor makes most people scratch their heads. Why is a rabbit the size of a man and a demon with a baby meringue waiting for a verdict from a reaper?
It turns out there’s actually a small explanation for this. As described by artist Randy Asplund, the rabbit is actually a puka, a Celtic spirit/demon.
Battery Blue Mana
I never understood the Blue Mana battery either. Should floating squares represent mana? Why are they just swimming in the sea?
Through the living wall I can vote for the funniest card art in the world. The angry face of the wall, her large body and small limbs and the woman walking through the wall in fear make her hilarious.
Art in Naked Singularity describes my face well when I read the effect. This card is completely attached to your opponent, but probably confuses you just as much. I can’t imagine building a deck around that card.
Goblin Craftsmen is another hilarious art map. We all know that elves are not the most intelligent creatures, but who would have thought they would eat noodles?
It’s one of the strange creatures of magic. To be honest, I’m probably seeing him in my nightmares tonight.
Chaos Orb not only has a grotesque image, it also has one of the most unusual and unique effects in the game. When you play a card, you must either throw it off the board or discard it, and any card that touches it is destroyed. Who would have thought you would know about visual and motor coordination at Magic Gathering?
The Dark Procession
It’s a strange artwork on this card, but it actually corresponds very well with the name of the card. There’s nothing I can say better than to describe it as a scary parade of… fishing.
The character on this map looks like Zuko in Avatar: The last airbender is too close to be just a coincidence. Metindustry Avatar is inspired by this map.
Presence of master
You may think it’s a fake card, but no, it’s actually Einstein on a magic card.
A word from the team
Shuffle your opponent with this card. Something about the way the eyes look is really disturbing.
If this amulet is an accurate representation, Cove must have been a man or an ugly creature. This card is designed for Ante’s Magic options and essentially forces the opponent to bet his top card or convert the result of the game into a coin.
Wall of life
Another map is a nightmare. Seriously, those teeth bother me every time.
This is an original artwork for a bee sting card. I must say, it’s very annoying to see someone get bitten so badly. Of course, the man would have liked to wear more than a scarf that day.
Actually, I like the paintings on this card. That’s what a brain vertebra would literally look like.
Yeah, it’s a real map, and yeah, it’s a flying zebra.
