15 Of The Best Turn-Based RPG Of All Time

Step-by-step role-playing games once dominated the era of Super Nintendo and PlayStation video games. From Final Fantasy to Dragon Quest to the old Phantasy Star games, the shops were full of epic adventures that stood in the way.

In recent years, there has been a decisive shift towards action-oriented role-playing. But if you strive for days of careful selection of the actions of each character in a respectable and civilized game, then you should take a look at these wonderful games :

We almost all agree that in most cases you can play up to fifteen of the best turn-based role-playing games that use a certain fantasy series that you do not understand the purpose of. With this in mind, we decided to limit each series of games to just one game from this list. This not only prevents some successful series from filling a slot every time, but it also allows more games and developers to have some time in the world.

WHAT IS A TURN-BASED ROLE-PLAYING GAME?

Simply put, turn-based role-playing is a game in which the main method of interaction with the world (usually a battle) is turn-based role-playing. I’ve split each game into a few key features that I think really embody what makes role-playing games with step-by-step instrumentation generally great:

  • History – Is it well written and authoritative?
  • Essay – Is there a strong dialogue and interesting legends in the world?
  • Effects – Does the player’s choice influence the world of the game?
  • Character Development – Is it allowed to customize the character in the game?
  • Research/Adventure – Is the game linear or does it let the player choose their own path?
  • Combat – Is it balanced? Is that intuitive? Is it fun?

It is now clear that these aspects will be very subjective. If you do not agree with the selection of this list, please do not hesitate to inform us. We are always open to new opinions and even to games that may not have been played yet. Let’s go to the list now!

15 Of The Best Turn-Based RPG Of All Time

Character development

No list of lap-based role-playing games would be complete without the X-Com series, which covers a period of ten years. With the first game released in 1994, the X-Com series has existed long enough to experience more and more pain, just like any other major series. Actually, it’s X-Com: Enemy Unknown (2012) shares part of its name with the very first X-Com game, UFO : Unknown enemy.

X-COM : Unknown enemy, source of image: Piracy games

History

X-Com: Enemy Unknown plays in an alternative, light and fantastic version of Earth, where our beautiful blue ball is conquered by aliens. As commander of an elite paramilitary organization, your task is to develop your base, improve your technology, equip and train your soldiers, and then lose those soldiers if they miss the 99% chance to quickly enter enemy fire and die.

As you progress through history, you will undertake more difficult and vital missions to prevent the loss of your precious world in the face of the alien threat, with the ultimate goal of facing a group of besieged people and declaring it World Independence Day. Wait, maybe this isn’t the right show.

EDITORIAL

In the more than 20 years of X-Com’s existence, dialogue and knowledge about X-Com has developed well. There are a considerable number of actions with a loud voice, and the letter is easy to follow. The writing of the game did not raise any real concerns, with the exception of some general stories about an alien invasion.

HEATING

The way you invest your limited resources tends to change your playing style, but not in the extreme. You could have done some tasks earlier than others to gain access to new technologies or resources that would have changed the way your soldiers or base worked, but these decisions largely changed the timeline of events, not the whole story.

There was a chance to lose some resources if those areas were destroyed by aliens, but otherwise, no matter which way you go, you’ll always have the same technology and resources at the end of the game.

Character development

In X-Com: Unknown Enemy You control a group of six soldiers (although you probably want more in reserve) using grid cards. Each character will have their own class or specialization, which they will focus on. The Attack class focuses on running and shooting, the Heavy class uses large rifles and bombs, the Support class heals, and the Sniper class uses sniper rifles.

What’s more, you have a random chance to acquire psionic skills with your characters that can significantly change your style of play. After the experience, the characters go to the next level and there is a skill tree from which you can choose skills. You have to choose between two skills, and the choice is mutually exclusive. You can also buy new and better weapons, armor and supplies for your soldiers in the desperate hope of keeping them alive.

Reconnaissance/exploration

Each player has a certain choice of mission to achieve, but the game is largely linear. There are critical operations that you must perform or you will lose the game, and even within the work area there is usually a path that you must maneuver to achieve your goal.

Wrestling

X-Com fighting is both the most cathartic and the most frustrating thing I’ve ever experienced. When I played Ironman, I spent every second making sure each character had enough coverage and support from allies, but there was always a problem. This is due to the fact that XCOM uses a percentage of randomization of punches in turn-based battles. Depending on the enemy’s coverage, size, defense and mystical programming, your delusional attacks have a certain chance to strike.

Your soldiers have different skills, but you’ll probably spend a lot of time guarding, a skill that allows you to open fire on enemies when they’re in sight. An enormous sense of satisfaction can be felt when a stranger takes to the streets and is immediately hit by a hail of bullets.

It’s less pleasant when you have six soldiers lined up to observe at close range and miss each of them. Don’t expect miracles from your soldiers. You miss 99% of the shooting chances once in a while and that makes you crazy.

Stop

Don’t give your soldiers the names of people you know unless you want to see them die.

4/5

Character development

South Park is a series that covers 22 seasons and nearly 300 episodes. It is only natural that the series takes a journey into the world of video games. Most attempts to bring South Park to gamers have been terrible, but in 2014 the reins of South Park were taken over by a company known for its ability to create fascinating role-playing games: The Truth Stick (ASOT). Obsidian Entertainment has brought the raw, satirical humour of South Park to the players in a truly hilarious and exciting way.

History

ASOT follows the story of a well-known newcomer in the fictional city of South Park, Colorado. Your character soon approaches the familiar and popular characters of the TV series and begins the search for the truth stick.

During the game, the city is subject to invasions by foreigners, government conspiracies and Nazi zombies (no, I’m not joking). There is also a particularly memorable scene with the parents of the new child, which I don’t want to ruin, but which will remain in my memory forever.

Letter

Writing for ASOT is undoubtedly beautiful. If you like to write in the South Park show, you will enjoy this game. Trey Parker and Matt Stone have been actively involved in the development of this game, as an example shows. This game is a very interactive episode of South Park.

corresponds to

Although the game offers different ways to acquire collectibles and explore the city, the plot is generally quite linear. There are not many important decisions that change the outcome of major events.

I wouldn’t say the player has a big influence on history in general, but don’t take that as a criticism. Sometimes you want to be able to adapt the story to your moods, like in the landscape of an airplane: Torture, but another time you just want to be part of the story that unfolds before you.

Character development

At the beginning of the game you can choose from four character classes, three trophies of warriors, magicians, thieves and a class that is truly unique to South Park: a Jew. As the game progresses, you will increase your level as you gain more experience in battles and events. You’ll also buy new equipment for your character to increase his attack and protection. It is not a very profound system of character development, to be honest, but it serves its purpose.

Reconnaissance/exploration

The game offers a fairly important opportunity to explore the city of South Park without having to shake hands often. Although some fields are blocked until you have completed certain tasks, it is generally recommended to navigate and search. This is all the more true because the game contains a considerable number of collectibles. If you are one of those people who has to find and collect everything, you will have a lot to collect.

Wrestling

The battles are very similar to those of most Final Fantasy series. Your characters are on one side of the screen, your enemies on the other, and you fight them in a neutral centre. The player has access to the usual attacks, ranged attacks, objects, special abilities, all the usual tools needed to defeat enemies (he also has the power of farts).

The new baby is not alone in his battles, and you can bring a companion to any fight. You can also call special characters during a fight to help you in difficult situations (don’t forget to call from Final Fantasy). Although ASOT in no way revolutionized turn-based combat, it brought to the world of role-playing a favorite comedy that was charming, funny, rude and a little funny. …and hilarious.

5/5

Character development

The series Wizardry has been at the centre of the role-playing world since 1981, a few years before my birth. Although I’m ashamed to say that I never made the big leap in magic games, I remember the first time I fired Wizardry 8 at the age of 13 and began my adventure.

History

The story of Wizard 8 follows a somewhat familiar path about the need to find three artifacts to ascend to divinity. These artifacts are the Astral Lord (key to life), the fate of the Lord (key to knowledge) and Molyri Chaos (key to change).
But to collect these powerful artifacts, you must explore a fascinating world of dangerous enemies, brave allies and mysterious observers.

Letter

It’s been a few years since I’ve played this game, but I can’t remember too many language games. Most of the information is provided through dialog boxes, and the game is extremely difficult to play. If you’re not familiar with the world of magic, you can sometimes get a little lost, but never so much that you can’t keep playing the game.

corresponds to

Wizardry 8 is one of those games where your decisions can influence the outcome of the game. By that, I mean it’s your final decision that really determines the outcome of the game, but along the way, you have the opportunity to help or fight against certain people. These people may decide to join you, offer you a reward or turn away from you. The Mass Effect 3 game shoots with 3 options at the end, but unlike Mass Effect 3, each option has radically different results.

Character development

You start the game by creating a game with six characters and you can invite two more NPCs to join as the game progresses. Fight one after the other and you can choose from 15 classes and 11 races, each with its own strengths and weaknesses.

This way you can form a group that fits almost any style of play. As you progress in the world, you will gain experience and reach a higher level, giving you access to new skills and abilities that you can use to further shape your group.

Reconnaissance/exploration

Wizardry 8 is a pretty important game and there is a lot to find. Everywhere in the landscape you meet interesting people, get to know them a little and kill them. I can’t remember that there are many restricted areas, there are some where you have to do missions or searches to get in, but for the most part your searches are only complicated by the relative number of monsters waiting for you in these new areas.

Wrestling

Wizardry 8 is an airborne turn-based RPG. Your party is acting as such. You assign actions to all your characters, and then the tour begins. Each man will act according to his speed, then the enemies will leave.

This is a fighting system from a more civilized era. You don’t have to react abruptly and you can plan your movements as carefully as you like.

The legend of heroes: Trails in the Sky is the first Japanese role-playing game in the JRPG style. This is the first Legend of Heroes game I played, although the series goes back to 1989 with Dragon Slayer: The legend of heroes. The approximately 14 Legend of Heroes games are divided into five sub-series: Trails in the Sky, Trailss-Crossbell Arc and Trails of Cold Steel are the last three series.

Hero legend: Traces in air , Source: Nihon Falkom

History

The story of the path to heaven follows the fervor of a young girl named Estelle Bright and a stoic and caring boy named Yeshua. If you’re looking for adventure, join the cadre known as Browsers, which includes your father Cassius. After the last fantastic lead, special crystals can be found, the missing father can be found and the bad guys can be arrested.

Letter

I have to say that Trails in the Sky is not as dark as some other JRPG games. The English version is well located, and I didn’t notice any obvious problems. I can’t remember a ton of voices, and you have to expect to read an absolute ton of revelations, legends and dialogues.

corresponds to

JRPGs tend to follow a very direct path, and this path is no different. Although you can work on the streets for the Brazilian Guild and sometimes for other NPCs, don’t be under any illusions that you have a choice, but continue with the story as it was written by the developers. Again, not bad. It’s an easy way to tell a story you can deal with and feel part of.

Character development

Trails in the Sky features a total of seven characters, each with their own skills, weapon preferences and fighting styles. As you take your group to the next level, you collect orbs and crystals that you use to upgrade your characters, acquire new skills and generally improve your group. As in most role-playing games, you can buy new weapons, armour and items for your characters, increasing their stats accordingly.

Reconnaissance/exploration

The exploration of the Kingdom of Freedom, the main setting of Trails in the Sky, takes place from the top-down perspective of a third person, and instead of random encounters, enemies appear on the world screen that you can attack or avoid at will.

In general, you can only explore areas that correspond to the part of the story you’re in, and some areas become inaccessible after you’ve come far enough into the game. Keep this in mind: If you’re the kind of person who has to hunt every object and monster, make sure you’ve done everything you can before continuing the main quest.

Wrestling

The tracks in the air are unique because the fight is a little harder than the traditional JRPG game. Instead of groups of goblins jumping on either side of the screen to quickly reassemble before retreating into their lines, the airborne battle paths cross a grid where you can maneuver your characters to go over enemies or approach them for devastating attacks. The battle is completely spinning, with a nice line that tells you when your characters are going to act and when the enemy is going to come and give you something.

Stop

If you are looking for an attractive and carefree JRPG that can dive for 40 to 100 hours, this might be just what you need.

Character development

Wasteland 2 is a post-apocalyptic, step-by-step role-playing game. It was funded by Kickstarter and is the sequel to the film Heath, released in 1988. It was one of the first games I released in Kickstarted, and although the original version had some pretty important bugs and problems, the patches and the Director’s Cut edition released in October 2015 solved a lot of those problems.

History

Wasteland 2 is an alternative story in which a global nuclear war has destroyed modern civilization. You take control of the Desert Rangers, a group dedicated to helping other survivors. You begin a voyage of discovery when the body of an experienced ranger is found dead, and you take it upon yourself to find out why he was killed and complete your mission.

The story takes place in two major regions, Arizona and Los Angeles. In all these regions you will come into contact with suicidal monks, looters, nomads, robots and many other colorful groups. Ultimately, your goal is to save your little part of the world from chaos and destruction. Good luck, sir.

Letter

The writing in Wasteland 2 was absolutely beautiful. There was a voice that was valid for some parts of the game, but not for others, and you have to expect to read a lot of dialogue if you want to study the context of the world.

Errors were found in the first publication, with some conversations appearing to be incorrect, but they seem to have been corrected. The world itself is quite detailed, and you really need to focus on the details if you want to get the most out of it.

corresponds to

Many of the decisions you make in Wasteland 2 have a big impact on the game world. In some parts of the game, the choice leads to the elimination of entire factions, makes the city hostile to you, or even destroys your party. Wasteland 2 is a game in which you have to think carefully about your decisions, because they have long-term consequences throughout the game.

Character development

In Badlands 2 you can initially create four units, and up to three NPC characters will join your group to continue your journey. Each character can be adapted to your specifications, and the points for the statistics are divided into the C.L.A.S.I.C. statistics. (coordination, happiness, consciousness, strength, speed, intelligence, charisma). Each of these stats will benefit your character in one way or another, and you can choose to specialize in a pair or group your character.

There are more voices on the way to competencies. There are three types of skills in the game: Combat, general knowledge and skills. You control the weapons you focus on, how your characters solve challenges and puzzles, and how they interact with the game world as a whole.

Reconnaissance/exploration

Waste in Arizona is hazardous and must be treated during the investigation. Although you have the option of moving around on your own, you should be aware that some areas will first be blocked by radiation clouds, which leave no doubt that your group will be completely destroyed.

In addition, random encounters can take place, including with killer robots, gangsters, looters, hidden caches and ruins for research. Intelligence is strongly encouraged, and one must be prepared to comb every inch of the territory to make the best of it.

Wrestling

The battles of Wasteland 2 are carried out tactically with a visible order of rotation. Fight through the grid, and your characters can attack, hide or melee from a distance, throw grenades and even destroy certain terrains to get a head start on your enemies. Each character has a certain number of action points that depend on his strength, intelligence and speed, and this determines how many things he can do in battle.

15 Of The Best Turn-Based RPG Of All Time

4/5

Character development

Darkest Dungeon is a game that won’t hold your hand when you sink into the hellish landscape. It’s a game that doesn’t hide the fact that adventurers who are constantly confronted with terrible nightmares are always driven to madness. Several parts of the CSD have been published, most of which are new character classes.

Crimson Yard is one of the two main CSDs and has both positive and negative effects on the balance of the game, while the color of madness is generally well received.

History

The darkest dungeon begins when you receive a message that you have inherited the domain from a parent. Unfortunately, this building is built on a huge pit of evil. Evil creatures have spread all over the world, from the portals to the dark dimensions, and it is now up to you to cleanse your country of these terrible creatures.

The story is told in different parts as you descend through different dungeons before reaching the dungeon that gave the game its name, Darkest Dungeon. Here you will face your fate. Good luck, sir.

Letter

The letter in the Darkest Dungeon is rather dark and boring, it fits well in his atmosphere. The story is fascinating, but not too massive, and you won’t read a novel for hours while you’re playing. The vocal actions are well thought out, although some of the rules used by the characters in battle can be repeated.

corresponds to

Your choice in the game does not have much influence on the plot. Most of your decisions will revolve around your village, especially which buildings to upgrade, which heroes to teach and how to deal with the terrible mental and physical scars your brave comrades will bear. Since this game is a bit of a scam, you may be in the already completed dungeons looking for gold, stuff or experience for new members to replace those who have come to a terrible end.

Character development

The game is available in 15 classes, with two additional heroes available through DLC purchases. Each class has its own weapons and armour, which can be upgraded by the blacksmith, and each one has its own skills that he brings with him to help his group on their painful journey. Heroes can move up resolution levels, allowing the hero to further improve his skills and equipment, making high-resolution heroes a valuable asset to protect.

Reconnaissance/exploration

Each dungeon is divided into different rooms that you have to explore to complete your mission. Every room can have enemies, traps, treasures, sanctuaries and even nothing. By interacting with these events you can gain experience, amateurs, debauchery or even instantaneous death. Some dungeons are linear, others allow a slightly wider choice of routes, but you don’t drive through the picturesque landscape in search of collectibles.

Wrestling

The battle is where the Black Keep shines. It’s sometimes visceral, provocative and disappointing. Your heroes are on one side of the screen and your enemies on the other. You process one file at a time and place your rightmost character on the first row. Some skills can only be used from certain positions in the training, so make sure your people are deployed in the right places.

Enemies and sometimes even your own abilities can change the order of your group. So you have to be very careful in your approach, and the long-term strategy of any battle will almost always be more effective than the instinctive reaction. In addition to physical injuries and scars, your characters may also have mental scars that can make them hesitate, change their alignment or even attack their own heroes. No one’s ever said it’s easy to cleanse the earth of evil.

Stop

Everyone who fights monsters has to look at them, so they don’t become monsters themselves. And if you look into the abyss for a long time, the abyss looks at you too.

Character development

Grandia is the first game in a series of 6 games. It was published in Japan in 1997 and came out on the 26th. October 1999 in North America. This is a real form of JRPG, where you play a young adventurer who is carried away in the adventure of the fate of the world at stake.

History

They play as Justin, an ambitious adventurer whose father is missing and whose mother doesn’t want to lose her son. You and your friend Sue explore the excavation site under the ridiculously inappropriate supervision of Sil Garril and steal a strange device you have to take with you all over the world.

You leave your mother excited, which probably leads to an emotional break because she thinks her whole family is lost. Well done, you idiot… Anyway, you jump into a boat to go to another part of the world, meet other allies, fight the bad guys and save the world. It’s the JRPG, don’t expect him to stray too far from the path with which the hero wins all odds.

Letter

As with most of the games on this list, there is a lot of reading. Some legends are shown through game scenes, but expect to read a lot of dialogue. There are not so many pleasures and surprises, but the bad guys are bad guys, the heroes are righteous, and there are some solid comedy scenes.

Character development

In Grandia there are two forms of experience. The first form is a general experience that raises your level, but the most important experience is that of competence. Skills are acquired through the use of weapons or spells.

As you gain experience with certain types of weapons or items, you’ll unlock new skills and moves. Frankly, I recommend that you consult the skill manual before embarking on any particular path of weaponry or magic. Note that training also improves your stats, such as strength.

Reconnaissance/exploration

Grandia is a pretty difficult plot game. Although the possibilities for exploration are limited, you will spend much more time moving from one history center to another. It’s certainly not an open world, and if you leave certain areas, you’ll find that you can’t come back. The monsters are visible on the world screen, and the battle begins when the elf hits the enemy.

Wrestling

Battle for Grandia as an alternative in the third person, but you can stop the enemy’s attack by striking while he is attacking. This doesn’t always work, but it’s best to try to interrupt enemies when possible.

15 Of The Best Turn-Based RPG Of All Time

5/5

Character development

Dragon Quest 11 is the latest in a long series of Dragon Quest games dating back to 1986. The first Dragon Quest game I played was on the NES, and my brother saved it for my game. I was very unhappy. The series has come a long way since then and I am convinced that Dragon Quest 11 is one of the best in the series.

History

As in most Dragon Quest games, you are a stoic hero and your mission is to save the earth. The principle of the game never really deviates, and you never think you’re not a hero.

The game keeps reminding you to save the world and you’re the only one who can, so grab your weapons and go give these bad guys something good.

Letter

The writing of Dragon Quest 11 is solid. All basic acronyms and some normal conversations are voice actions. You’ll have to read a little to get the best out of the game. What’s especially nice is that when the game is loaded, a short description of the game is given. So if you write it for about three weeks, you can go back, find out what’s going on and go back to your activities. I think more games should have this feature.

corresponds to

Like many JRPGs, this game is very linear. Besides the ubiquitous ability to crush experience and money, you get one or two tasks, and those are your only tasks. No abnormalities. You don’t really have a choice about what happens in the game – it’s an established story, and your only mission is to survive the journey.

Character development

His character is the lamp, in fact the knight Eldritch. They are equal parts with knives and a wizard spitting magic. By increasing your level, you can gain points in a hexadecimal talent tree that allows you to improve in certain aspects of the battle. The lamp can improve ambidisciplinary battles, sword and plate battles and magic skills.

But you’re not the only character with a talent tree, and each of the 6 NPC games you can guide has its own skills and equipment preferences. As with most JRPGs, you’ll upgrade your armor and weapons in every new city, so make sure you go out there and defeat a lot of monsters.

Reconnaissance/exploration

Dragon Quest 11 is a relatively open world, with some areas limited in their search or in the required levels. A whole range of secret objects and places can be found, and research is encouraged. In some parts of the game you may not return to certain areas. Therefore, it is generally recommended to do an intensive exploration before the most important quests are completed.

Wrestling

Although you can move freely on the battlefield with your character, it’s no use. The battles actually follow the same pattern as other Dragon Quest games and most Final Fantasy games.

Your units line up on one side of the battle, while the enemy line up on the other side and you keep fighting until death follows with weapons and magic until one side wins. I suggest, if you’re familiar with these combat systems, that you fight with strong restraints. It seems that Dragon Quest 11 is a bit too easy to play in normal mode.

5/5

Character development

If the developer of Fallout 2 looks familiar to you, it’s probably because you played Baldur’s Gate, Baldur’s Gate 2, Icewind Dale, Icewind Dale 2, or Planescape: Torture. Fallout 2 was released in 1998 and was designed by Chris Avellon and Matthew Norton. It is rightly considered one of the best role-playing games of all time.

Second case, source image: Black Oil Studios, which no longer exists today.

History

The story of Fallout 2 begins about 80 years after the events of Fallout. The hero (you) is a direct descendant of the occupant of the Warehouse of the Fall of Man, and it is your job to obtain a GECK (Garden of Eden) set that can effectively terraform the blown wasteland into a thriving ecosystem.

Along the way you’ll encounter enemies ranging from the ridiculous Rad Roaches to the terrifying Deathclaw and Supermutants. But you will also meet nice people who give you commands, rewards and other things and thank you from the bottom of their hearts. Sally is the fourth brave heroine.

Letter

The letter for Fallout 2 is fine, but don’t expect too much language play. You will effectively read a novel while playing the game and you will have to be careful to get the information you are looking for. If you think books are for nerds and you don’t like your gamer’s eyes to be tainted by words written by a man, this won’t be a game to you.

corresponds to

This is a game where your choice will have a huge impact on the game world. Even though the end is quite difficult, you can make friends with some people by making enemies of others and this will eventually have an effect on the areas that are safe for you and that you might want to avoid.

Character development

Fallout 2’s character development is almost identical to other Fallout games you might know. There are 7 statistics known as S.P.E.C.I.A.L. (Strength, Perception, Perseverance, Charisma, Intelligence, Ability, Skill, Happiness) and you will award points to each of them to give bonuses to your character. There are also 18 skills in which you can invest points, and you can’t maximize them all, so choose wisely.

Finally, there are bonuses that are no different from the performance of Dungeons and Dragons, which you can choose from a few levels and give your character extra bonuses. There are also a few companions who can join your party, and (if I remember correctly) you can only transfer half of your charisma to the party members. So Charisma can be very important if you want to take your friends with you.

Reconnaissance/exploration

Feel free to explore the world of Fallout 2 at your leisure. Just make sure you save a lot of money, because bad things can wait around every corner and it’s not enough to rely on hopes and dreams to survive. Some areas are blocked by quests or skill tests, but otherwise you can move freely to your locations.

Wrestling

Fight in Fallout 2 one by one, each character has a certain amount of action points. You spend your action points by moving, attacking, using objects, etc. Your satellites are not under your direct control, but you can adjust their behaviour and tactics so they usually do what you want them to do.

Stop

Be stingy if you make a mistake, like in real life, not with the Secret Service. Just trust me. Just trust me.

The Might and Magic series dates from 1986 and was originally a raster adventure game. Might and Magic 6, 7, 8 and 9 enabled smooth movement and exploration before Might and Magic 10 brought the series back to the grid roots. Might and Magic 7 will hardly make Might and Magic 6 my favorite game in the series, but both are great games worth playing.

Might and Magic 7 follows the story of your party from a group of four brave adventurers taking part in an island competition, where the prize is the glory and your own estate. Of course no one says your domain is full of monsters and your land is under siege by invading goblins, but that’s just semantics.

As you work to secure your home, you soon realize that the world of Enroths is not right, with elves and people at each other’s throats and your little Dale in the middle of it all. It becomes even more difficult when you have to befriend angels or demons, which of course causes the other party to hate you. Choose wisely, ladies and gentlemen.

Letter

The game contains a handful of scenes sculpted with sound, but don’t expect the sound to give you a lot of information. You’ll read a lot of texts. Most of the information you get comes from exhibitions and legends, but if you like a well-developed world, rich in history and intrigue, writing will satisfy your wishes.

corresponds to

There are two or three important options in the game that will have a significant impact on the way your story unfolds and ends. There are two main finals and some interludes that change as you like.

Apart from these big decisions (which are easy to see), there is nothing special about influencing the world. In most cases, things outside the cities will be your enemies, and things inside will be your friends.

Character development

You control a group of four heroes from four different races and nine classes. Each race has its own starting attributes, and you can change their stats using the points system when you create characters. Unlike Might and Magic 6, where you can master any skill as long as your class can learn it, Might and Magic 7 introduced special skills for each class.

Of the approximately 34 skills in the game, only a few of each class can reach mastery status. It is therefore important to diversify the game if you want to access spells and skills at a higher level.

The characters gain experience in battles and quests, but unlike the other role-playing games on this list, the fact that you meet the experience requirements for the next level doesn’t mean you’ll move on to the next level. Instead, you need to find a training center and pay for gold to cover your desperate need for skill points.

Reconnaissance/exploration

The world of Magic and Magic 7 is almost completely open to you as soon as you descend from the Emerald Islands (where you start the game). The only thing that prevents you from looking freely into every nook and cranny are the legions of monsters waiting to eat your face.

There are ways to bypass some of these enemies and place scout beyond your control (or magic), but in general, you will want to stick to the right areas of each level until you become stronger.

Wrestling

When I added this game to the list, I realised a somewhat controversial detail, namely that it wasn’t exactly a turn-based fighting game. Just use the forks and torches. Might and Magic 7, just like its predecessor Might and Magic 6, is a hybrid game. You can fight in real time, which happens more and more often when you unlock a certain weapon class at the end of the game, but for most of the game you fight in the turn-based attack mode.

Since your camera mode is locked in the first person and your group is just a floating camera, you need to remember the enemies around you by throwing arrows and casting spells and hacking into them. Your group moves as a unit, but each character will act independently based on speed and initiative.

Stop

Ancient weapons are too powerful.

Character development

The Shadowrun series comes from the role play with paper and pencil of the same name. In this dark future, the world has become a corporate democracy and the fairy races, magic and dragons have returned to earth. The first Shadowrun game was released for Super Nintendo in 1993, while other enhancements appeared on Sega Genesis, Mega-CD and Xbox 360. In 2013, Shadowrun: The Shadow was also published: A year later, the Draconian case came to light.

History

Shadow run: The Fall of the Dragon follows the story of the Twilight Runner, who travels to Berlin to join the team and plunder the data warehouse in the villa. The mission will fail and your leader will die. Your team will be forced to flee under the influence of the security forces.

You know you were founded, and your teammates will choose you as their new leader. As you travel through a very dark world, you begin to discover pieces of history rich in intrigue, betrayal and entertainment. You can also meet the dragon. So that’s pretty cool.

Letter

The writing in the Dragon case is excellent. The world is rich in legends, atmosphere and details. Many of the dialogues are voice-driven, but to get the best out of the game, you need to read a certain text. I sincerely hope that other Shadowrun games will be made by the same author, because Dragonfall took what Shadowrun took: The comeback was, and she made it even better.

corresponds to

Dragon Falls offers only limited possibilities to influence the game world. Usually you will pursue scenario goals that have only one possible outcome, but you can make different decisions that will change the end of the game.

However, where Dragon Falls shines, there are usually different methods to overcome puzzles and events. So you can use the strengths of your characters instead of forcing yourself to play in a certain style every time you meet them.

Character development

Shadowrun is a game in which you create only one main character, which you control throughout the game. There are six classes and five races to choose from. Interestingly, the choice of breed is actually more important than the choice of class.

Some breeds have limitations or bonuses on the extent to which they can promote certain skills or characteristics. The classes in this game are known as archetypes, or you can just create your own character by adding your karma points to whatever you want.

Speaking of karmic glasses: This is what you will collect and spend to improve your skills as you progress in the game. There are 6 statistics in the game (strength, speed, body, intelligence, charisma, will) and, with the exception of the body, each of them has its corresponding capabilities. You can (and should) spend your karma on both primary stats and skills to make your character more powerful.

Reconnaissance/exploration

Shadow run: The fall of the dragon is a fairly linear game. Although you can explore the areas you visit, this game is by no means an open world. During the trip you might find enough side quests, hidden caches or legendary interactions, so I recommend that you at least take a quick look at each area. Most areas will become inaccessible when you’ve completed your mission there, so don’t expect to be able to return there when the mission is over.

Wrestling

The Battle of Dragonapade is identical to the Battle of Shadowrun: He’s coming back. You’re leading a troop of mercenaries at the starting line. Each character receives a certain number of action points with which they can move, attack, use magic, objects or pirates.

There are often fights in two different areas: In the real world, most of your characters will also fight, remove and avoid hailstorms. The Matrix is where you will fight Decker some of his battles, fight the semi physical structure of the network, fight the defensive AI and try to open doors to fight for tower control or to get information or credits.

Stop

Get Decker in here every time. You’ll regret it if you don’t show up.

15 Of The Best Turn-Based RPG Of All Time

4/5

Character development

Like I said at the beginning of this list. Final Fantasy can fill almost all the gaps in this list, if you give it the freedom to act. The series began in 1987 with the release of Final Fantasy on the NES and has since expanded to more than 30 games. Choosing one of the Final Fantasy to put it above all else was very difficult, but I had to go with my heart, and Final Fantasy 9 was my choice (although Final Fantasy 4,5,6,7 and 10 were close to second place).

History

The story of Final Fantasy 9 begins when you take control of a small boy with a big head and a big tail and learn that your mission is to kidnap the royal family. The plan seems solid. What could go wrong? That’s all I’m saying. It doesn’t work like that.

You start a desperate fight to save the world from a strange lady with really great hips and a chin clown who is desperate to conquer his neighbors. It all ends in a fight with one of the most insecure bosses. Don’t joke, you beat whoever you think the boss is just to meet another boss who has never been mentioned in the game at any given time.

Letter

There are no votes in Final Fantasy 9, so get used to reading. All the legends and information are presented to you through beautifully designed but silent and sculpted scenes and dialogues. The plot is solid, but a little confusing, as in all Final Fantasy games. Zidane and his companions have a good reason to continue and fight evil, and the game has a nice musical score.

corresponds to

You don’t really have a choice in this game. You’re a passenger on the narrative train to the end. The only possibility that can affect the game world is the choice of mini-games such as Chocobo Hot-and-Cold or Frog Hunt to unlock skills for Quina. None of them change history significantly.

Character development

Final Fantasy 9 has 8 playable main characters, each corresponding to the traditional Final Fantasy class. Like Zidane the thief, Granada the white wizard, Vivi the black wizard, etc… Each character is assigned a specific weapon, except Granada, Vivi and Eiko, who share some of their weapons. In addition, each character has their own class of armor to wear – light, medium or heavy, as well as accessories to equip them with.

You’re probably wondering why it was important to explain all this. This is because each of these weapons, armour and accessories has its own capabilities. By equipping these objects, you can use some or all of the object’s capabilities.

When you kill your enemies, you’ll get an AP that will eventually allow you to explore or control the ability, and you can then remove the item without losing the ability. In addition to this detail-based skill system, you’ll also get the usual experience that will improve your character’s stats.

Reconnaissance/exploration

Final Fantasy 9 offers two different ways to explore your world. The first thing you’ll come across are the game screens which, unlike Final Fantasy 7, are actually pre-configured backgrounds where your character can move around. The second is a 3D world map, where you work from top to bottom with a moving camera.

Field screens are usually used in cities, dungeons and at events, while the World Screen is used to guide you around these locations. Final Fantasy 9 offers a huge amount of research, including a mini treasure hunt game known as Chocobo Hot and Cold.

Wrestling

Final Fantasy 9 step combat system. You can spend time choosing your actions to maximize your chances of winning each battle. Two characters can use the magical challenge known as Eidolons in this game, while others do not have magical but much higher physical attacks.

There is a system called trance in the game that is similar to the Limit Break in Final Fantasy 7. After you’ve sustained enough damage, and sometimes thanks to the game triggers, your character will light up and have access to special teams.

15 Of The Best Turn-Based RPG Of All Time

4/5

Character development

Although EarthBound was originally launched on the 27th. Published in August 1994, it reached North America almost a year later. This is the second game of the Mother trilogy and one of my favorite games of all time.

History

EarthBound follows the story of a little boy named Ness (or whatever you call him). You explore the site of the meteorite crash with your neighbor Pokey and discover that the alien Guigas makes everything and everyone vicious and aggressive.

The little insect tells you how to stop Guigas, but despite its immense power, the insect dies under the influence of Poki’s mother, and you’re sent on an epic journey through different cities and even through the internal affairs of your own mind.

Letter

EarthBound is witty, funny and doesn’t take itself too seriously. You will meet enemies who are literally animated objects with angry faces. There are no linguistic actions, so you should expect to read all the legends and information, but since this is a SNES game, it won’t be as long as the novel. It’s a stupid game, and you have to expect a well told and exciting story, with a good mood.

corresponds to

Their actions have little influence on history. In fact, this game is so plot-driven that I can’t imagine any solution that would change the outcome of an event. But that’s not a criticism. To be able to tell a story effectively, it is sometimes necessary to take control of the player. Expect to like the story, but don’t expect it to touch you.

Character development

The alignment in the earth’s crust is linear. After the fight, you’ll gain some experience. Once you’ve reached the level of experience required for the next level, you’ll automatically raise the level, get stats and unlock all the skills for that level. During the alignment there’s no choice, and the only real development you can decide for your character is if you want to crush enemies to gain extra experience.

Reconnaissance/exploration

The world of EarthBound (also known as Eagleland) is quite linear. You travel from your hometown of Onett to Twoson to Threed and so on. However, each village or district is not a variation on a number, but you have the opportunity to view each village or district in detail before moving on to the next one. For most of the game, you can go back to areas that have already been explored, but I advise you to explore each area completely before moving on to the next.

Wrestling

The combat system in EarthBound is relatively simple. You place your actions in a queue, then everything is activated in an invisible rotation order. Because it is an old game, there is not much animation during the battles. Battles are relatively fast, and if your characters become stronger than the enemies you’re fighting, battles with weaker opponents are automatically won.

Stop

Call your favorite thing something funny.

15 Of The Best Turn-Based RPG Of All Time

4/5

Character development

Now we go with Chrono Trigger in second place at the listening station. This game has made so many top 10 lists that it shouldn’t surprise anyone. Chrono Trigger is an iconic role-playing game that is one of the best games ever.

Triggering the chronograph, source: Square

History

In Chrono Trigger you follow the story of Chrono, a young silent hero whose mother allows him to attend Mass with a wooden sword. If you beat a robot like me to get a real sword, you’ll be thrown into a time adventure.

Your first mission is to save the princess you unnecessarily endangered with your friend’s teleporter, and from there you must stop the apocalypse from ending the world. You’d better get started.

Letter

Chrono Trigger is the highlight of the era of role-playing games on Super Nintendo. There are many twists and turns that can surprise you, and even a moving moment when a tragedy strikes at your party. This game, like most older games, has no voice, so expect plenty of reading while playing. It takes every second.

corresponds to

It is interesting to note that the way you win the game will change the goal. Some changes are relatively small, but some decisions will lead to very large differences. Chrono Trigger has 12 endings in the basic game and one extra end in the DS, iOS and Android versions, each with its own requirements, depending on the actions you perform during the game. I advise you to watch them after the game, because some of them are rather difficult to reach.

Character development`

As with most Super Nintendo JRPG games, character development is linear. Your characters get their role and they’ll discover their special skills as they move up the career ladder. An interesting aspect of Chrono Triggers is that, depending on the combination of characters in your game, you can access double or triple techniques that combine the abilities of two characters for a more powerful effect. I suggest you take another look at them and try them on. The game has many combinations.

Reconnaissance/exploration

Most of the game takes place on the field screens where you will explore dungeons, cities and forests. The terrain screens are also the place where you can see the enemies on the screen next to the ambush, so you can try to dodge them or run away without fighting. The rest of the game takes place on the world screen, where you generally travel from one city, dungeon or area of interest to another.

Wrestling

Battle of the time one by one. You have an attack field that fills slowly, and when it’s done you can get into action and sometimes just wait until other characters are ready to use double or triple techniques. Your characters can move around on the battle screen, but this is only cosmetic and has no impact on the battlefield.

Stop

Magus didn’t do anything wrong.

15 Of The Best Turn-Based RPG Of All Time

5/5

Character development

We’ve finally reached the end of our list. Fourteen games went by and my favorite game of all time triumphed. The divinity: Original Sin 2 is probably the best game I’ve ever played, not to mention turn-based RPG.

Although the first version had quite serious bugs and problems, everything was fixed and the final version was released, adding a lot of content and expanding the world.

History

The story begins on a boat on its way to Fort Joy, a prison island for people who can use the well, a special magic mark that has the unfortunate side effect of attracting the empty horn to its use. Your ship is attacked by Voidspone when a mighty wizard breaks his bonds and starts to destroy things.

Saved by your god and sometimes by a demon, you are washed ashore and from there your journey begins completely. First you have to find a way to remove the collar, and then you learn that you are a very special person. After all, you have to save the world somehow. Good luck, sir.

Letter

Writing in divinity: Original sin 2 is so dense that it can fill many books. Despite the fact that there are so many language acts, there are simply too many legends and conversations to be fully expressed. I can’t wait to read it. The writing itself is excellent, and Larian Studios has done excellent work to breathe new life into the world.

corresponds to

It’s a game in which almost every decision makes sense. Helping a person can make waves during the game, while killing the wrong person can prevent you from participating in the whole chain of quests. I’ve played this match three times already and I’m still figuring out what I missed in the previous finals.

Character development

You can control everything that has to do with the development of your character. There are many options that need to be taken during the character creation process, but fortunately there are only three that have a real connection to the game itself. The first choice is whether you want to play a fairy tale character or a custom character. I strongly recommend the use of storytelling characters as they enrich the storyline of the game and unlock unique encounters and quests.

If you choose a custom symbol, only your races and gender will be imported, because they cannot be changed later unless you use the mask to change shape. It’s important to choose your skills and stats carefully for the first part of the game, but as soon as you leave Fort Joy, you’ll have almost unlimited opportunities to customize your skills and stats. So don’t think you have to restart the game because you’re not satisfied with your current skills.

Walk past Fort Joy and customize your character the way you want. There are 6 indicators (Strength, Delicacy, Intelligence, Constitution, Memory and Spirit), 17 combat skills, 7 civilian skills and over 40 talents to choose from.

Reconnaissance/exploration

Divinity Original Sin 2 is a game where you can explore a bit freely, but it is also a game where the level scale is a bit problematic. In general, you will want to stay in areas that are close to or just below your current level.

The reason for this is a nonlinear scale. In later levels, especially the last, you can see that the enemy has a level above you much more physical and magical armour than you have. Yet you must surely search every corner of this world. There are so many items, quests and hidden events that it is almost impossible to get them during a game trip.

Wrestling

Combat in the DOS:2 is visceral, complex and very strategic. Many spells and effects feed on each other, and it takes several battles to get them. The fight is completely step-by-step, with a rotating sequence at the top of the screen that tells you when your characters can act and when it’s the turn of the enemies.

Turnaround command is based on initiative. Many spells and skills can change the whole battlefield. A simple rainstorm can turn a simple fight into a dizzying nightmare when lightning hits the field.

Characters and enemies have two forms of defense, physical and magical, which must be bypassed before they lose health points. It is important to have a varied group, as some enemies are very vulnerable to physical attacks, while others have little magical protection. Your characters, too, will have strengths and weaknesses… Sometimes fights take too long.

Stop

Honor to the King of Fountains.
